Persona 5, Q, P4D, P4A2 – Announcement Trailers
Last night Christmas came early, courtesy of a barrage of announcement trailers from my favorite game publishers/developer ATLUS. A teaser site had gone up sometime back, and fans were speculating as to what might be announced. There was a general consensus we would see a Persona 5 announcement, but I don’t think anyone could have predicted the other two new games announced: Persona Q and Persona 4 Dancing All Night. Here are the trailers that went up last night.
Persona 5 Teaser Trailer
This game is due out sometime in Japan sometime winter 2014. ATLUS has a crack localization team, and their Western releases usually come out within 6 months of the Japanese release, so hopefully we won’t have to wait very long to get it here in the West. I am not suprised that this game is coming to the PS3, considering Persona Team has only released one HD game on the console thus far, the very quirky and enjoyable block puzzler Catherine. Despite its vocal fan base, the Persona series is still relatively niche, so releasing it on PS4 with its relatively small install base wouldn’t make much sense at all. I’m still working on Persona 3 Portable (It’s LOOOOOOOONG) and haven’t started P4G yet, but I really should take care of these games quickly.
Persona Q is a 3DS dungeon crawler that crosses over characters from Persona 3 and 4, with development helmed by the director of Etrian Odyssey IV, my favorite game this year. The characters even have a little bit of that not quite totally chibi Etrian Odyssey flair. I CAN’T FUCKING WAIT. It’s out in Japan on 6/5/2013, so with any luck we’ll see a fall release in North America.
Persona 4 Dancing All Night
Maybe the most baffling and unexpected of the new games announced last night, a Persona themed rhythm game coming to the Vita courtesy of ATLUS and Project Diva devs Dingo. I don’t think anybody could have predicted this, but the series’ superlative music is a perfect fit for the genre so it kind of makes sense. I’m curious to see if the game will deviate at all from the bare-bones functionality of the Project Diva series by adding a story mode or anything like that. I’ll be importing for sure, either way. The Vita’s lackluster performance in the West makes localization a dicey prospect, but ATLUS parent company SEGA is bringing Diva f out on the Vita as a digital only release, so maybe we’ll see a downloadable version at least.
Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold
Lastly we have P4A2 coming to Japanese arcades in just 4 days, and PS3 in the summer. The only news here is the release dates. Anyway, 2014 is looking to be another spectacular year for games. and the good news is they’re all coming to systems you probably already own. If I was in any kind of rush to run out and pick up a PS4 or an Xbone, I certainly am not now. The hype train has pulled into the station, and it looks like it’s going to be an awesome trip.
