News GaiDen 4/20/13 Luigi Infinite
Welcome to another edition of News GaiDen, where we share our thoughts on this week’s big game news. Once again Nintendo decides to hold another Nintendo Direct, and it is just megaton announcement after megaton announcement. I am getting really hyped for their E3 news, because if this is what they announce on a random Wednesday in April, their E3 reveals are going to be INSANE. Lets get right to it.
Nintendo Direct 4/17/13
So here’s the Nintendo Direct for your viewing pleasure. I recommend watching it if you’ve got the time, especially if you’re excited about the Year of Luigi announcements from a previous Nintendo Direct. Iwata spends some time showing the upcoming Luigi-centric titles, and reveals a bit more info about their features. That’s not the big news though, this is the big news:
- New Yoshi’s Island sequel coming to 3DS
- Earthbound coming to Wii U Virtual Console by the end of the year
- Bravely Default: Flying Fairy coming to North America in 2014
- Zelda: A Link to the Past sequel coming to 3DS for the holidays
And there you have 4 megaton 3DS announcements all packed into one Nintendo Direct. Also announced were the Guild 02 games coming to the North America, so keep an eye out for those. I really liked the Guild 01 games that came out here, even Aero Porter which I don’t regret buying despite its quirks. Nintendo is banking heavily on nostalgia with the above announcements, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting that now there will be a way to legally own Earthbound without having to pay the outrageous ebay prices for the original SNES cart. I can’t wait for an official date so I can start clearing my gaming calendar to make room to play through it. The last time I played Earthbound was back when I was a kid, and I enjoyed it in bits in pieces over repeat rentals from the Blockbuster video, so I’m looking forward to taking my time with it on the Wii U virtual console. My body is ready.
3DS outperforms the DS in NA, digital sales up
Reggie has been in the news this week talking all raw about how the 3SD is absolutely tearing it up on the hardware and software fronts in North America. Spirits must be riding high at Nintendo of America rignt now. For a handheld that had a troubled launch into a market where handhelds were supposed to be replaced by mobile phones (hahahah, yeah people really thought this would happen), the 3DS is defying all expectations and performing above expectations, surpassing the wildly successful DS here in the US. Also, a high volume of digital sales for titles like Fire Emblem and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon are proof positive that a significant portion of the 3DS install base is uninterested in either buying or selling games on the used secondary market, and are more than happy to just pay full price to Nintendo for the convenience of downloadable titles. I’m partial to owning carts myself, so I’m maybe a little sad when signs start pointing towards an all digital future for software.
Wii U sales still shameful
So now we get to the Wii U portion of the news, where analyst predictions are still pointing towards poor sales performance and lack of momentum for the Wii U hardware. I was hoping for a surge in sales this month due to the release of both Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Lego City Undercover on the platform, but maybe I am expecting too much. We’ll see how sales turn out over the long term, but for now the console is sluggishly under-performing even compared to the GameCube. If things take a turn for the worst with this console, I can imagine a future where Nintendo just gives up on the home console market and dedicates their efforts to handhelds. I would be okay with that, actually.
La Mulana comes to Steam

This game I know absolutely nothing about is coming to Steam! Apparently it was a WiiWare title? I never bought any WiiWare, and am under the impression that most of it was junk (correct me if I’m wrong), so I missed out on what supposedly is a really fantastic game for retro platforming action masochists. I would like to count myself among the retro platforming action masochist population, or R-PAMs as we like to be known (note – that is not really a thing), so I think I’ll be checking this out on some platform. In a perfect world you wouldn’t have to switch the Wii U over to Wii mode and access a whole other eShop to buy WiiWare titles, so maybe I’ll just get it on Steam. Either way, I’ll probably write about it for the site at some point.
That’s all for this week! Woah, all the news was Nintendo news. C’mon Sony, what are you up to? Also, Microsoft… hahaha, yeah actually I don’t care what they’re up to. Looking forward to a weekend full of Etrian Odyssey IV and maybe a little Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the side. Persona 3 Portable might stop by to visit. Crap, I have a lot of games to play!
